I’ve broken my mental pie-crust promise that I’d get a letter out to you THIS WEEK almost twelve times, so I’m glad that I’ve finally buckled down, cut off the phone and followed through.

As we discussed at Alumni Weekend, we need to get focused on Scott’s scholarship and get the foundation for that endowment well established.

At this time, $1500 in gifts has come in. This amount will cover the 2006 ($1000) scholarship (please see the enclosed documents for information about this year’s recipient.)

The $1500 will also cover TWO $250 scholarships (2007 & 2008). If we have the endowment in place by the beginning of October 2008 (when the second $250 scholarship is awarded), the endowment will then have 12 months to grow its interest before the 2009 award ($250) is distributed; the endowment is expected to produce a $250 scholarship each year based on current interest rates.

In order to reach our $5000 endowment goal, each of us should plan to give a minimum of $350 between now and October 2008 (for those of you who would like a monthly breakdown: that’s 21 months (Jan 07- Sept 08) at about $17/month.)

Gifts may be made by check or credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover) using the enclosed form at the end of this letter or by calling my office or the corporation’s Finance office: 828-687-5125 (Advancement), 828-687-5112 (Finance).

All gifts are tax-deductible and a receipt will be issued to you promptly after your gift has been received. Please be sure to mark your gift as going to the “Scott Kinzer’s Scholarship.”

I’ve enclosed a commitment/pledge form, so we may have a clear idea of where we stand in relation to this goal. Please seriously consider what you will be able to do and return this commitment form promptly. I will send out a monthly e-mail update to any of you for whom I have e-mail addresses.

If you would like the 2007 and 2008 awards to be larger than $250, you are welcome to contribute additional funds to those awards.

In order for me to keep track of your wishes, please specify the amount you want credited to a specific year’s scholarship. For example, if you give an $80 gift and want $30 of that to go to the 2007 award please communicate the following either in writing or verbally: “Scott Kinzer’s Scholarship: $50 to endowment; $30 to 2007 award.”
